The rhythm of our Turkish sojourn has quickened—not dramatically, but just enough to infuse our blood with excitement and adventure, elevating our adrenaline and unveiling possibilities beyond mere slow living. Though unhurried days remain our foundation, everything changed on Monday with my birthday celebration.
The cable car ascent to Babadag fountain followed by our meandering descent through the park awakened a hunger in me—a craving for exploration, for communion with the majestic nature that surrounds us. These mountains and beaches, these islands and this blooming spring landscape have cast their spell. The intoxicating scent of orange blossoms mingles with the industrious hum of bees and bumblebees, a symphony of renewal. I cherish this spring awakening after the dormancy of my winter heart.
Since Monday, we've embarked on a parade of firsts—paragliding, 8 of us experiencing inaugural Turkish bath and massage. We've driven across the region, discovering pristine beaches and making our way to the abandoned city of Kayaköy. There, we hiked down the mountain to a secluded bay of cold waters where we alone dared to plunge into the Mediterranean. That distinctive scent of saltwater and herbs transported me instantly to my childhood.
Occasionally, I feel that delicious flutter in my stomach—butterflies stirring from memories buried in the centuries of my being. I treasure these moments of profound connection.
Friends have come and gone, bringing with them deep conversations that unfold during long drives and deeper swims. We've even made time to visit local veterinarians, securing medicine for the stray cats that have adopted our terrace. We treat them for parasites and fleas, feeding them daily with growing affection.
My mornings now begin with gym sessions across the street at eight—such luxury in its simplicity. I know I'll miss this effortless routine when we leave. We've discovered our favorite markets—Friday and Sunday—where we gather provisions for the meals I continue to prepare with care. I'm midway through a 15-day metabolic reset, preparing my body for spring, summer, and new beginnings.
In quieter moments, we complete our final puzzle, its image nearly whole now. I immerse myself in interviews and an unschooling summit, take contemplative walks under magnificent sunsets, and hold my children close. Through it all—the play, the creativity, the unexpected adventures—the slowness remains, enveloping us like the Turkish air, warm and filled with promise.
